U.S. health officials have issued a travel warning for Costa Rica because of a recent outbreak of the mosquito‑borne chikungunya virus.
The advisory targets Guanacaste Province, where most cases have been identified in the popular beach destination of Playa Langosta, a region known for its surfing, hiking and tourism.
Chikungunya spreads through mosquito bites and typically causes fever and severe joint pain. Symptoms usually appear three to seven days after exposure and may include headache, muscle pain, joint swelling and rash.
While most patients recover within a week, some experience persistent joint pain that can last months or even years. No specific antiviral treatment exists, making prevention the primary defense.
Travelers are urged to apply insect repellent, wear long‑sleeved shirts and pants, and stay in accommodations equipped with air conditioning or window screens. Vaccination is also recommended for eligible visitors to affected areas.
Local health authorities have confirmed four cases and identified 17 probable cases linked to the outbreak, affecting both residents and foreign visitors.
Specialized response teams have fumigated roughly 5,000 homes and eliminated mosquito breeding sites in an effort to contain the virus.
Anyone who develops fever, joint pain, headache, muscle pain, joint swelling or a rash during or after their trip should seek medical care promptly.
This notice follows recent Level 2 travel advisories for other regions experiencing chikungunya outbreaks, including locations in South America, the Indian Ocean, and Asia.
