A teenage soldier from the American Revolution has been identified after more than two centuries in an unmarked grave, marking the first use of DNA and forensic genetic genealogy to name a Revolutionary War veteran.
Researchers determined the remains belong to Private John Pumphrey, who died in the Battle of Camden in South Carolina on August 16, 1780. The confrontation was one of the Continental Army’s most devastating defeats, claiming hundreds of American lives.
Records suggest Pumphrey enlisted in 1777 between the ages of 13 and 15, making him 16 to 18 years old at the time of his death. He was a member of George Washington’s “Old Line” and hailed from a prominent Maryland family involved in lumber and land ownership.
The skeleton was uncovered during a 2022 excavation of the battlefield site. A small fragment of skull was used to extract DNA, which led to the identification and subsequent reburial with military honors in 2024.
The discovery highlights that young boys often joined the Continental Army, though it was not common for adolescents from affluent families to enlist. Initial analysis of the remains indicated a very young age, prompting questions about why a boy of Pumphrey’s background would join the fight.
Further research revealed turmoil over his father’s estate after his parents’ deaths and a closer proximity to Baltimore than previously thought. These details clarified that enlistment in Baltimore was a logical choice for the young man.
The findings are reshaping the narrative of the Battle of Camden, offering historians insights that were previously unattainable. The use of genetic evidence provides a new layer of understanding about the individuals who fought and died in the war.
