Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow faced criticism for a controversial statement made during Sunday’s Pride Parade, an event intended to celebrate unity and inclusivity. The incident occurred as tensions over a separate issue continue to divide the city.
Footage circulating online shows Chow responding to a supporter who requested a statement on a politically sensitive matter. The mayor complied, issuing a remark that sparked immediate backlash. The exchange took place amid ongoing debates following a series of high-profile events in late 2023.
“Happy Pride, Mayor Olivia,” the supporter said before prompting the contentious statement. “Yes,” Chow replied, adding the requested phrase. The interaction quickly drew attention on social media, where users expressed strong opinions about the mayor’s stance on related issues.
Critics accused Chow of prioritizing political calculations over community cohesion. Some highlighted her absence from past events supporting another cause, raising questions about her approach to diaspora relations. “She’s never joined Toronto’s Walk with Israel,” one user noted, adding, “Hopefully voters punish her for playing diaspora politics with clear bias.”
Chow’s primary challenger in the upcoming mayoral race, Brad Bradford, attended the same parade with a different focus. “Sunday was about celebrating the queer community,” he said. “My message was: Toronto is a diverse and inclusive city with a rich history. I was there to support the Pride Parade as an ally.”
Bradford acknowledged the mayor’s divisive impact on the city. “She has torn the social fabric of this city apart,” he stated. “We need to come back together and unify.” He called for a return to a more cohesive vision for Toronto, describing current divisions as harmful and unhelpful.
Additional videos posted online showed Chow participating in Pride weekend celebrations at a club. Attempts to reach the mayor for comment were unsuccessful as of Monday evening.
