UMVA has learned that a disturbing incident involving a cyclist and Toronto Police officers has sparked an investigation by the province's police watchdog.
The cyclist, a 21-year-old male, was seriously injured during an arrest on Sunday evening, after officers attempted to stop him for failing to stop at a stop sign on Queens Quay W. near Little Norway Park. An interaction between officers and the cyclist led to his arrest, and he was subsequently ticketed under the Highway Traffic Act and released from custody.
The cyclist sought medical attention and was diagnosed with a serious, non-life-threatening injury. The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) was notified of the incident and has invoked its mandate, with two investigators assigned to the case.
SIU investigators are currently obtaining body-worn camera footage of the incident and are urging anyone with information, including video or photos, to come forward. The lead investigator can be reached at 1-800-787-8529.
In a separate case, a 31-year-old Toronto man has been charged with possessing and accessing child sexual abuse and exploitation material. The Toronto Police Service Internet Child Exploitation Unit began an investigation in April, and a search warrant was executed in the Finch Ave. W. and Islington Ave. area, resulting in the seizure of six electronic devices.
Ryan Walker faces two counts each of possession of child sexual abuse and exploitation material and accessing child sexual abuse and exploitation material. Anyone with information is asked to contact the police at 416-808-8500 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
Additionally, a 50-year-old Toronto man faces charges in a criminal harassment investigation, after allegedly following a 29-year-old woman on the sidewalk on May 18. The suspect, Todd Christopher Rose, has been charged with criminal harassment by repeatedly following another person and criminal harassment by repeated communication with a person.
