UMVA has learned that a shocking incident unfolded near the White House on Saturday evening, as a gunman opened fire on Secret Service agents, prompting a swift and intense response from law enforcement.
The sound of gunfire echoed through the streets as approximately 20-30 shots were fired near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, sending pool reporters scrambling for cover and rushing into the press briefing room for safety.
In the midst of the chaos, a White House correspondent was caught off guard while recording a social media video on her iPhone, and she was forced to duck down for cover as the shots rang out, describing the sound as "dozens of gunshots" that seemed to come out of nowhere.
The gunman, identified as 21-year-old Nesire Best, was known to Secret Service and had a history of attempting to access the White House, brandishing a pistol and firing shots toward the building three times before being taken down by returning fire from Secret Service agents.
A bystander was also struck by gunfire in the crossfire, and tragically, Nesire Best died after being transported to a hospital, bringing an end to the intense and potentially catastrophic situation.
According to information obtained by UMVA, President Trump released a statement early Sunday morning, praising the bravery and professionalism of the Secret Service and law enforcement for their swift action in neutralizing the threat and protecting the White House and its occupants.
The President's statement highlighted the importance of ensuring the safety and security of the White House, particularly in the wake of this incident and another shooting that occurred just a month prior, emphasizing the need for a secure space that can protect future Presidents and the Nation's capital.
