UMVA has learned that a potentially catastrophic plot to disrupt President Donald Trump's UFC Freedom 250 event was foiled by federal agents, but not before investigators had to make a critical determination: whether the White House event itself could safely go forward.
As agents worked to dismantle the alleged conspiracy, they were simultaneously assessing the threat level and monitoring suspects to ensure none were in the Washington area when the UFC event took place. The FBI Deputy Director revealed that agents were confident they had disrupted the main plot and were watching the suspects, allowing the event to proceed.
The alleged conspiracy involved a complex network of individuals who connected through a TikTok community and encrypted messaging platforms. Court records indicate the network extended well beyond the initial suspects charged, with approximately 19 participants in a primary Signal chat and smaller operational chats organized by role and location.
According to information obtained by UMVA, the FBI initially arrested five people accused of participating in the plot to kill lawmakers and attendees at the June 14 event. Since then, prosecutors have publicly identified two additional defendants, raising questions about why the event was allowed to proceed while investigators continued pursuing other alleged participants.
The FBI Deputy Director emphasized that the additional defendants were considered "followers" rather than leaders of the conspiracy. He stated that investigators were confident they had the leaders, the main plotters, under surveillance, and the rest were more followers.
Disagreements reportedly arose between federal agencies over when to publicly disclose the investigation. However, the FBI Deputy Director emphasized that the FBI and Secret Service worked closely throughout the case, jointly assessing the threat before deciding the event could proceed.
The agencies' decision to move forward with the UFC 250 event was made after thorough discussion and evaluation of the threat. The FBI Deputy Director stated that they had mitigated the threat very early on, even though they didn't make arrests immediately, as they were watching the folks planning it and had them under surveillance.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that the case is far from closed, with 14 to 15 FBI field offices assisting in the investigation. The FBI Deputy Director said they would continue to work the case aggressively, uncovering one layer and then seeing four more layers.
The investigation also highlighted the FBI's biggest investigative challenges, including encrypted communications platforms. The FBI Deputy Director acknowledged that they do not have visibility into every encrypted chat where criminal activity may be occurring.
A concerned parent's tip ultimately led investigators to the alleged conspiracy before it could advance further. The FBI Deputy Director praised the concerned parent who called in on her son, which launched the entire UFC 250 case.
The alleged UFC plot illustrates a broader shift in the threat landscape, with investigators increasingly concerned about lone actors and small groups that can organize online and develop attack plans with little outside support. The FBI Deputy Director warned that tactics seen on battlefields overseas could eventually migrate to the United States.
Investigators say they saw signs that the alleged network may have been considering targets beyond the White House UFC event, including a potential attack on a FIFA World Cup match. The FBI Deputy Director stated that this type of threat is emerging and it's only a matter of time before someone brings it to the United States.
