The mayor of Winnsboro, Louisiana, Alice Wallace, faces serious allegations of defrauding the state’s Medicaid system, culminating in her recent indictment on six counts of government benefits fraud.
Attorney General Liz Murrill announced the charges, detailing a scheme where Wallace allegedly illegally secured approximately $75,000 in benefits between 2021 and 2026.
The investigation revealed a pattern of omissions and misrepresentations regarding Wallace’s income and health insurance coverage.
Specifically, authorities claim Wallace failed to report her employment – both prior to and during her time as mayor – and did not disclose the health insurance offered through those positions to the Louisiana Department of Health.
This concealment allowed Wallace and a dependent to continue receiving Medicaid benefits despite a salary that would have rendered them ineligible, according to investigators.
Following her arrest, Wallace responded with a defiant statement posted on social media, claiming she would be “vindicated” and suggesting the charges were politically motivated.
She characterized the situation as an attempt to “embarrass and discredit leadership” and energize her supporters, framing the timing of the indictment – just weeks before the mayoral election – as suspect.
The Attorney General’s office has been firm in its stance, stating that no one is above the law and that those who exploit taxpayer funds will be held accountable.
