The highly anticipated second season of I Kissed a Girl has hit the screens, and the cast is making a lasting impression. The show, which dropped on Tuesday, follows the journey of ten single ladies looking for love in an Italian masseria.
The cast, consisting of Ashlea, 25, Elise, 24, Nikita, and Faye also 24, had the chance to sit down with Metro and share their thoughts on the show and its cancellation. Unfortunately, the show has been axed by the BBC due to 'funding challenges', making this season the swan song.
The cast members were vocal about their disappointment, with Imogen stating, 'You cannot cancel lesbians.' The others agreed, with Tyra adding, 'You can't cancel people. You can't cancel their stories.' Ebony passionately affirmed, 'This whole cancelling thing, just pushes us to be more loud and proud […] We won't go down without a fight.'
Faye emphasized that the entire LGBTQIA+ community felt strongly about the show's cancellation, saying, 'Everyone was angry because everyone loves the show, and it's like something is being ripped away from us.' The cast members believe that the show has been a game-changer for representation, particularly for the lesbian community.
Each episode of I Kissed a Girl features five couples, matched by Dannii Minogue, coming together for the first time and meeting with a kiss. The show is a romantic and intense journey, with the women trying to survive 'kiss-offs' and make their way to the final.
Renee called it the 'lesbian Olympics', saying, 'It's a high stress situation, it's very intense. Very competitive.' Tyra joked it was 'survival of the fittest'. The show has sparked important conversations about stereotypes and nuance, particularly when it comes to masculine women.
Renee emphasized that people often assume she's a 'stud' but in fact, she's not. She believes that people should be treated equally in terms of their emotions, regardless of their label. The show has given a platform for the cast members to share their thoughts and feelings, and they've all taken away valuable lessons from their experiences.
Elise reflected on her time on the show, saying, 'I am very emotional. […] I could have handled myself better.' Renee claimed, 'I learnt how to deal with rejection.' The cast members believe that the show has brought a breath of fresh air to a roster of increasingly problematic reality TV shows.
As the show comes to a close, the cast is determined to go out with a bang, with Imogen saying, 'We just need to go out with a bang,' before Ebony added, 'And just continue the bang, for the rest of time.' I Kissed a Girl season 2, episodes 1-4, are available to watch on BBC iPlayer. New episodes drop on Tuesday, June 30.
