A wave of support is surging for a California sheriff after his stark declaration following the death of a man who murdered one of his deputies. Tulare County Sheriff Mike Boudreaux didn't mince words, announcing that his department intentionally used an armored vehicle to end the life of the killer.
The confrontation began with a routine eviction notice served to 59-year-old David Morales. What unfolded quickly spiraled into tragedy when Morales opened fire on the responding officers, fatally wounding 35-year-old Detective Randy Hoppert.
An hours-long standoff ensued, escalating tensions as law enforcement sought to apprehend Morales. Ultimately, a BearCat armored vehicle, operated by the Kern County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team, was deployed, resulting in Morales’ death.
“We intentionally ran him over,” Sheriff Boudreaux stated plainly to assembled reporters, his voice resonating with a raw, unwavering resolve. He then delivered a chilling message to anyone contemplating violence against law enforcement.
“Don’t shoot at cops. You shoot at cops, we’re going to run you over,” Boudreaux continued, his words echoing a firm line drawn against those who threaten the safety of officers. “He got run over; he got what he deserved.”
The events unfolded rapidly after the initial shots were fired. Deputies initially crouched for cover as gunfire erupted, some retreating to safety. Backup was immediately requested, and Detective Hoppert was among those responding to the escalating crisis.
Before the decisive action was taken, authorities deployed gas into Morales’ residence in an attempt to force his surrender. A California Highway Patrol helicopter, equipped with specialized technology, was then utilized to pinpoint the suspect’s location once he emerged.
Detective Randy Hoppert was a dedicated public servant, having previously served as a Navy corpsman from 2010 to 2015. His loss is deeply felt, leaving behind a wife who was four months pregnant and another child.
The community mourns the loss of a husband, father, and law enforcement officer, while many are expressing support for the sheriff’s decisive actions and unwavering commitment to protecting those who serve and protect.
