The thug rams into the dad, shoving past him after a brief struggle. He slides into the driver's seat, the engine seconds from roaring to life—with the father's entire family trapped inside.
But the father is armed. In a split-second that feels like an eternity, he raises his weapon and fires. Ten shots ring out. The carjacker slumps forward, defeated before he can even shift into gear.
The suspect was rushed to the hospital, but his injuries were fatal. The father and his family walked away without a scratch. He stayed at the scene, handed over his gun, and told investigators exactly what happened.
Cell phone footage from a witness shows the same man in a peach shirt had already smashed into two cars on Highway 66 around 3:30 p.m., then fled to a gas station where he tried to break into multiple vehicles.
Garland Police Lieutenant Pedro Barineau called it a textbook case of self-defense. "The driver was defending himself," he said. "The car was occupied by several children and two adult females. We're looking at this as a self-defense case."
One resident who saw the aftermath put it bluntly: "I have three kids. I'm gonna do whatever it takes to keep them safe. That kind of stuff is split-second."
Police have not yet released the identity of the deceased carjacker, describing him only as a Hispanic male. The father's name is being kept private—a man who made an impossible choice in a heartbeat and lived to tell the story.
