A former FBI agent and vocal critic of the Justice Department’s handling of January 6th cases has resigned from his senior position within the DOJ. Jared Wise announced his departure with a stark message: the corruption runs too deep to be effectively challenged from within.
Wise stated that his return to Washington was specifically to expose what he believes were abuses committed by the FBI and DOJ against individuals involved in the January 6th events. He quickly realized, however, that a full and honest accounting could only be achieved outside the confines of government service.
Before joining the DOJ, Wise worked as a journalist with Project Veritas and was present at the Capitol on January 6th, documenting the day’s events. Bodycam footage from that day captured heated exchanges, including accusations leveled against law enforcement officers, leading to felony and misdemeanor charges against him.
Those charges were ultimately dismissed following the inauguration of a new president, as part of a broader wave of pardons granted to hundreds of individuals facing prosecution related to January 6th. This dismissal, however, did little to quell the outrage from political opponents.
Leading Democratic lawmakers immediately condemned Wise’s hiring by the DOJ, demanding his resignation in a strongly worded letter. They cited his presence at the Capitol and the initial charges against him as evidence of a dangerous politicization of the Justice Department.
The DOJ initially defended the appointment, acknowledging Wise as a “valued member” of the team and praising his contributions. This support, however, proved short-lived in the wake of leadership changes within the department.
Wise’s resignation comes after a recent change in leadership, with a new interim US attorney general appointed following the removal of the previous official. His departure signals a deepening rift and a commitment to pursuing his claims of wrongdoing from a position of independence.
