The heatwave may be in full swing, but autumn is just around the corner, and with it comes a new film that promises to keep viewers cosy – Sense and Sensibility, starring Daisy Edgar-Jones, has just dropped its first trailer.
Directed by Georgia Oakley, the film brings a fresh take to Jane Austen's iconic novel, which was first published in 1811. This latest adaptation comes from Working Title and the producers behind the highly acclaimed period drama Pride & Prejudice, another Austen classic.
The first trailer for Sense and Sensibility offers a glimpse into the lives of the Dashwood sisters, Elinor (Edgar-Jones) and Marianne (Esmé Creed-Miles), as they navigate love, loss, and family drama in 19th-century England.
The cast also includes Caitríona Balfe as Mrs Dashwood, Bodhi Rae Breathnach as youngest sister Margaret, and Fiona Shaw as Mrs Jennings, who is determined to help the sisters find suitable husbands.
The trailer also introduces George MacKay as Edward Ferrars, who is set to be a revelation in the film. MacKay's portrayal of the character is a welcome change from previous adaptations, and he brings a sense of intrigue and charm to the role.
Other notable cast members include Frank Dillane as the charming Mr Willoughby and Herbert Nordrum as the quiet, older Colonel Brandon. The trailer teases a physical confrontation between Brandon and Willoughby, which is sure to thrill fans of the book.
The script, adapted by Diana Reid, features famous quotes from the novel and brings a deft handling of Austen's original text. The trailer ends on Marianne's perfectly understandable admission of her ideal suitor, "I require so much."
Sense and Sensibility looks set to deliver another classy, beautifully respectful Austen adaptation, with a welcome serving of yearning on the side. The film is set to hit UK cinemas on September 25.
