ZION PARK SHUTDOWN: Hiker's Fatal Plunge Sparks Emergency Closure!

ZION PARK SHUTDOWN: Hiker's Fatal Plunge Sparks Emergency Closure!

The majestic cliffs of Zion National Park witnessed a tragedy last Friday, claiming the life of Gilberto Ramos, a 68-year-old man from Laredo, Texas. Ramos succumbed to injuries sustained in a fall from the infamous Angels Landing trail, a route renowned for its breathtaking views and perilous heights.

The incident occurred around 2 p.m. local time, sending a ripple of concern through the park as reports of a fallen hiker reached officials. Angels Landing, with its narrow spine and sheer drop-offs, demands respect and unwavering focus from those who dare to traverse it.

Park rangers and local law enforcement swiftly mobilized, initiating a search that ultimately led them to Ramos’ location on the north side of Angels Landing, near a landmark known as Big Bend. The recovery operation was a delicate and somber undertaking, concluding late Friday evening.

Ramos’ remains were then transferred to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and the Utah Office of the Medical Examiner for further investigation and identification. Public confirmation of his identity came on Monday, bringing a wave of sadness to those familiar with the park and its trails.

Following the accident, authorities temporarily closed the West Rim Trail, including the challenging ascent to Scout Lookout and Angels Landing itself, to facilitate the response and recovery efforts. The closure allowed for a thorough assessment of the area and provided a moment of quiet reflection.

An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fall is currently underway, conducted jointly by the National Park Service and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office. Details are being carefully examined to understand the sequence of events.

Angels Landing is currently closed for scheduled trail maintenance from April 20th through April 23rd, with no permits being issued during this period. The lottery system for permits will resume on April 23rd, allowing hikers to apply for access beginning April 24th.

While Angels Landing remains inaccessible, the broader West Rim Trail remains open to the public, offering alternative routes for experiencing the grandeur of Zion Canyon. Visitors are reminded to exercise caution and respect the power of the natural environment.
