The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources reported that total production of artisanal, solar and cooking salt reached 199,293 metric tons in the first six months of the year, moving the sector nearer to the government’s 2029 target of 244,000 metric tons.
The 2029 goal is projected to raise domestic salt self‑sufficiency to 32 percent, with an ultimate aim of achieving full self‑sufficiency by 2040.
The Development of Salt Industry Project is tasked with revitalizing the sector by providing producer support, upgrading technology and expanding livelihood opportunities for coastal communities.
In Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur, a fisherfolk association produced 6,564 kilograms—almost seven metric tons—of high‑quality salt under the project’s assistance.
The bureau supplied the association with solar beds, salt dryers, storage facilities and operational tools, and the regional office plans to deliver an iodizing machine this year to further enhance production capacity.
Local agricultural officials highlighted that restoring the salt industry at the community level is essential for strengthening domestic supply and creating sustainable livelihoods.
National leadership affirmed that the bureau will continue to support the Philippine salt industry until it reaches its full potential.
