Mayon Volcano continues to stir, and authorities are issuing a stark warning: stay away. The 6-kilometer permanent danger zone is strictly off-limits, a boundary defined not by caution, but by the very real threat of fatal hazards.
Despite the absence of a large explosive eruption, the volcano’s current effusive activity – a slow, relentless outflow of lava – presents significant dangers. This molten rock, accumulating on the steep slopes, is unstable and prone to collapse, triggering potentially devastating landslides.
The heat alone is a critical concern. Contact with the lava means severe, life-threatening burns. But the danger extends beyond direct contact; being buried in volcanic ash carries a silent, equally deadly risk – suffocation from lack of oxygen.
Officials are emphasizing the importance of simple protective measures during ashfall events. Wearing face masks is crucial, but even a dampened cloth can provide a vital barrier against the abrasive and irritating particles.
Seeking shelter indoors, sealing all potential entry points, and avoiding travel are also strongly advised. Ashfall creates treacherous conditions, rendering roads slick and visibility near zero, making even a short drive incredibly dangerous.
Currently, the volcano remains at Alert Level 3, and monitoring indicates no immediate escalation towards Alert Level 4. However, vigilance remains paramount, as evidenced by a recent pyroclastic density current reported early Tuesday morning.
