The defeat stung for Manchester United, a lackluster performance against Leeds United that left a legend questioning the tactical choices made on the night.
Edwin van der Sar, a four-time Premier League champion with United, pinpointed a specific decision by interim manager Michael Carrick that he believed contributed to the 2-1 loss: starting Benjamin Sesko.
Carrick faced a challenging situation with injuries and suspensions, forced to adjust the lineup with Kobbie Mainoo sidelined and Harry Maguire unavailable. Changes were made, bringing in Manuel Ugarte and Lisandro Martinez, while Noussair Mazraoui filled in at right-back.
Sesko, typically a dynamic impact substitute, was given the nod to start ahead of Bryan Mbeumo. However, the move proved ineffective, with Sesko struggling to make a mark against a resolute Jaka Bijol.
Van der Sar acknowledged the impact of Mainoo’s absence, noting the importance of youth and the values the young midfielder brings to the team. He felt the midfield lacked a certain balance without Mainoo’s presence alongside Casemiro and Ugarte.
But the Dutch icon’s concern extended beyond the midfield, directly questioning the decision to alter the attacking dynamic by starting Sesko. The Slovenian international has thrived coming off the bench, scoring four of his five goals under Carrick as a substitute.
Sesko has still managed a respectable ten goals in 29 appearances this season, standing as United’s sole traditional number nine. Despite this, the game against Leeds highlighted a potential need for further firepower.
Another United great, Nicky Butt, echoed this sentiment, stating Sesko cannot shoulder the burden of leading the attack alone, especially with aspirations of returning to Champions League competition.
Butt praised Sesko’s potential, movement, and work rate, but believes a truly elite striker is needed to elevate the team to the next level. The Champions League demands a different caliber of player, a higher tempo, and the ability to perform under immense pressure.
Butt emphasized the importance of strategic recruitment, advocating for the acquisition of a player who will not only improve the squad but also inspire those around them, pushing Sesko and others to reach their full potential.
