Former Arsenal stalwart William Gallas has pinpointed areas where Mikel Arteta could refine the squad this summer, believing subtle changes could unlock the full potential of their recent big-money signing, Viktor Gyokeres.
Gyokeres, arriving at the Emirates for £64 million, has shown flashes of brilliance with 18 goals, but hasn’t entirely silenced the doubters questioning whether he’s the definitive answer up front for a title-contending team.
Gallas isn’t suggesting Gyokeres is a failure, but rather that the team’s approach needs adjustment to truly capitalize on his strengths. He argues that a shift in style, focusing on quicker, more direct service, is crucial for the Swedish striker to flourish.
The former defender’s scrutiny extends to Arsenal’s wide players, specifically those on the left flank. He expressed surprise at Gabriel Martinelli’s quiet season, noting a significant drop in Premier League goals, and categorized Leandro Trossard as a valuable, but ultimately limited, squad option.
Gallas believes the current midfield tendency to retain possession hinders Gyokeres, who thrives on runs into space. He explains that Gyokeres consistently seeks the ball in front of him, but often finds midfielders prioritizing possession over a swift, forward pass.
To truly elevate Gyokeres’s impact, Gallas suggests Arsenal might need to consider a dynamic left winger. He favors Bradley Barcola over Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, believing Barcola’s style would better complement Gyokeres’s goal-scoring instincts.
The challenge for Gyokeres, according to Gallas, is to surpass 20 goals next season. However, he acknowledges this will be difficult if Arsenal maintain their current tactical approach, as Gyokeres doesn’t possess the same physical dominance he displayed in the Portuguese league.
Gyokeres recently found himself on the bench during a crucial clash against Manchester City, entering the game only in the final minutes. He will be eager to make an impact when Arsenal face Newcastle, seeking to reignite their title challenge.
Gallas ultimately believes Arsenal possess a strong foundation, but these targeted adjustments – particularly on the left wing and in service to the striker – could be the difference between contention and triumph.
