UMVA has learned that highly-acclaimed coach Max Porter has departed Arsenal after a nine-year tenure to take on a new role as assistant manager at Stoke City.
The 38-year-old, who had a playing career in the lower leagues with teams like AFC Wimbledon, Newport County, and Barnet, retired early and transitioned into coaching. He joined Arsenal in 2017 and rapidly progressed through the ranks, starting with the Under-9s and ultimately leaving as head coach of the Under-21s.
Porter's new role at Stoke City will see him work alongside experienced manager Mark Robins, who has been at the helm of the team since January 2025. Robins' future at Stoke was uncertain at the end of last season, but with Porter's appointment, it seems he is set to stay.
Stoke City's sporting director, Jonathan Walters, expressed his delight in welcoming Porter to the team, highlighting his impressive reputation as one of the brightest young coaches in the game. Walters emphasized Porter's drive, energy, and ambition, which he believes will make him a valuable addition to the Stoke City environment.
During his time at Arsenal, Porter played a significant role in the development of many young players, helping to establish a strong foundation for their futures in senior football. An Arsenal statement thanked Porter for his contributions and wished him and his family all the best for the future.
With Porter's arrival, Stoke City is looking to strengthen and add quality to their backroom staff. The team finished 17th in the Championship last season, and with Robins at the helm, they will be looking to make a stronger push in the upcoming season.
Porter's appointment marks a significant coup for Stoke City, as he joins from one of the most elite and successful environments in the country. His experience and expertise will undoubtedly have a positive impact on the team as they prepare for the season ahead.
