Former FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino recently shared a candid account of his time within the Bureau, revealing a deeply fractured organization grappling with internal conflict. He described walking into a situation riddled with “level A problems” – crises demanding immediate attention with potentially catastrophic consequences.
Bongino painted a picture of two distinct “FBIs” operating simultaneously. One was comprised of dedicated agents, relentlessly pursuing violent criminals and protecting the vulnerable, individuals he held in the highest regard. He recounted stories of seasoned Task Force Officers, like a 38-year veteran in Miami, responsible for taking countless dangerous individuals off the streets.
The other “FBI,” however, was a different beast altogether – populated by individuals he bluntly characterized as “snakes.” The unsettling reality, he explained, was that identifying members of this shadowy faction wasn’t always straightforward, creating a climate of distrust and uncertainty.
Navigating this internal landscape proved treacherous, especially for a newcomer. Bongino recalled the difficulty of seeking advice when he couldn’t be certain if the source was a trustworthy ally or a hidden adversary. Even trusted external contacts occasionally misjudged individuals, leading to damaging leaks to the media.
To expose this betrayal, Bongino employed a calculated tactic. He deliberately fabricated a minor detail about his schedule – a dinner reservation at Fleming’s Steakhouse – and then watched as the information surfaced in the press. This confirmed his suspicions and allowed him to confront the leaker directly, engaging in a tense game of cat and mouse.
The situation, he asserted, deteriorated further with the advent of the Biden administration, with the FBI seemingly prioritizing politically charged investigations over addressing genuine threats. Bongino lamented a shift in focus, alleging resources were diverted to pursuing cases against Donald Trump while neglecting the pursuit of dangerous criminals.
Beyond his FBI experiences, Bongino also touched upon a personal battle, a cancer diagnosis that added another layer of complexity to an already challenging period. He spoke openly about facing this health crisis while simultaneously navigating the treacherous waters of a compromised federal agency.
