A tense confrontation erupted in Brooklyn Saturday night as federal immigration agents attempted to arrest a man accused of assault and drug possession, igniting a wave of protest and sparking outrage from local politicians.
The incident centered around Chidozie Wilson Okeke, a Nigerian national who allegedly overstayed his tourist visa. Department of Homeland Security officials state Okeke became physically combative during the arrest attempt, even allegedly trying to strike agents with his vehicle.
News of the arrest quickly spread, drawing a crowd of demonstrators to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center, where Okeke was undergoing a medical evaluation. The protest escalated, with reports of damage to ICE vehicles and minor injuries sustained by agents.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a vocal advocate for immigrant rights, condemned the ICE operation, labeling such raids as “cruel and inhumane.” He asserted they do not contribute to public safety, even while acknowledging he hadn’t viewed footage of the hospital protest.
Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso echoed the sentiment, expressing alarm over ICE’s presence in the neighborhood and urging residents to report any sightings of federal agents via a local hotline. He publicly praised those who mobilized to protest.
State Senator Julia Salazar also took to social media, voicing concern over the heavy NYPD presence at what she characterized as a legitimate gathering of concerned residents. She, too, encouraged reporting of ICE activity.
According to DHS, Okeke continued to resist even during his medical evaluation, reportedly throwing himself to the floor and shouting. He entered the country legally on a tourist visa in 2023 but failed to depart by the required date in February.
Video footage captured the moment ICE agents removed Okeke from the hospital, facing a determined crowd of protesters. The situation underscored the deep divisions surrounding immigration enforcement in the city.
City Councilmember Sandy Nurse, who was present at the protest for several hours, described the arrest as a “kidnapping,” highlighting the lack of information available regarding the detained individual. She expressed gratitude for the swift response of community members.
Following the confrontation, nine individuals were taken into custody. Eight face charges including resisting arrest, obstructing governmental administration, and criminal mischief, while one received a summons and was released.
Mamdani has previously stated his support for abolishing ICE, characterizing the agency as one that “terrorizes people” regardless of their immigration status or legal standing. He believes the agency’s actions often contradict its stated purpose.
