A wave of financial relief is heading towards millions of Canadians next month. On June 5th, a new benefit – the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit – will begin distributing funds, offering a crucial lifeline to those grappling with rising costs.
This isn’t entirely new; it’s a significant evolution of the existing GST/HST credit program. The government is essentially rebranding and bolstering the existing system to directly address the pressures of today’s economy, specifically the soaring price of groceries and essential goods.
The benefit is designed to be automatic, requiring no separate application process. If you already receive the quarterly GST/HST credit and have filed your 2024 tax return, you’re already enrolled and eligible for this support.
The initial payout on June 5th will be a substantial one-time boost, equivalent to 50% of your full annual GST/HST credit. For a family of four earning $40,000 annually, this translates to a $533 deposit directly into their bank account.
But the support doesn’t stop there. Beyond the immediate payment, those same families can anticipate an ongoing increase to their benefits, adding an extra $272 to their payments in the 2026-27 benefit year. This represents a long-term commitment to easing financial burdens.
Individuals will also see a meaningful difference. A single person with a net income of $25,000 will receive $267 on June 5th, followed by a sustained increase of $136 annually starting in 2026-27.
The government estimates that over 12 million Canadians will benefit from this program, a significant portion of the population facing economic challenges. This widespread impact underscores the importance of this initiative.
Looking ahead, the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit will fully replace the GST/HST credit starting this July. By the end of 2026, a family of four could receive up to $1,890 in total benefits, while single individuals could see payouts reaching $950.
Your eligibility and the amount you receive are determined solely by the income you declare on your tax return. The CRA will automatically calculate and distribute the benefits, ensuring a streamlined and accessible process for those who need it most.
