Trump Addresses Fed’s Decision to Keep Rates Steady

President Trump reacted to the Federal Reserve’s recent decision to keep interest rates unchanged, attributing the move to what he described as a “political” board of governors. He praised the Fed Chair, calling him a brilliant individual who would prefer lower rates if not for the board’s influence.

Earlier on Monday, while speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump urged that rates should be lowered, citing concerns that higher rates could push the economy toward 8%, 9%, 10%, or even 12% growth rates. He highlighted the board’s political nature and suggested that the chair’s intentions are hindered by members with questionable motives.

Trump also referenced the United States’ economic strength, claiming it is the most robust nation globally and emphasizing its pivotal role for allies such as Israel. He asserted that his intervention prevented the collapse of Israel and criticized the previous administration’s nuclear agreements.

In addition, he praised large-scale domestic investments, noting that the country is experiencing unprecedented spending, including the construction of major automobile plants by companies like Toyota. He contrasted this with the prior administration’s lower spending levels, emphasizing the scale of current economic activity.

During the same interview, Trump mentioned the high spending of industry leaders, citing the Nvidia CEO’s billions in investment as evidence of significant private sector activity. He also highlighted that the federal budget is far larger than that of other countries, referencing a $19.2 trillion annual expenditure.

The Federal Open Market Committee voted 9‑3 to keep the federal funds rate within the 3.5% to 3.75% range. Three members opposed the decision, seeking a 0.25 percentage point increase in rates.
