The vast expanse of the Eastern Pacific Ocean became the scene of a significant victory on Easter Sunday. The U.S. Coast Guard cutter Escanaba intercepted a massive shipment of cocaine, valued at over $33.9 million, disrupting a network intent on flooding American streets with dangerous narcotics.
The operation began with a crucial alert from a U.S. patrol aircraft. Spotting a vessel suspected of involvement in narco-terrorism, the aircraft immediately notified the Escanaba. As the cutter approached, the crew of the suspect vessel began frantically discarding packages overboard, a desperate attempt to eliminate evidence.
Responding swiftly, the Escanaba launched an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter and deployed a specialized pursuit team. They worked tirelessly to recover the jettisoned contraband, ultimately securing 4,510 pounds of cocaine from the waves. The operation showcased remarkable coordination and determination.
This successful interdiction was part of Operation Pacific Viper, a large-scale initiative launched to directly confront the escalating threat posed by foreign drug cartels. The operation aims to dismantle these criminal organizations and sever their financial lifelines.
Operation Pacific Viper represents a sustained and aggressive strategy. Initial phases of the operation yielded an astonishing $473 million worth of illegal drugs, including over 61,000 pounds of cocaine and 14,000 pounds of marijuana. The Coast Guard’s commitment to disrupting the flow of narcotics is unwavering.
To date, Operation Pacific Viper has resulted in the seizure of over 215,000 pounds of cocaine and the detention of more than 160 suspected narco-traffickers. These numbers represent a significant blow to cartel operations and a tangible improvement in the safety of American communities.
The cutter Stone previously made headlines in November with a massive offload of illicit drugs, totaling over 49,000 pounds and valued at $362 million. This demonstrates the consistent success of the Coast Guard’s efforts in the region.
The Coast Guard has strategically increased its presence with cutters, aircraft, and specialized tactical teams. This surge in resources is designed to overwhelm cartel operations and effectively interdict, seize, and disrupt the movement of illicit drugs.
