A night of revelry near the University of Iowa campus shattered early Sunday morning when a large brawl erupted, culminating in a violent shooting that left five people injured.
The incident unfolded around 1:46 a.m. in Iowa City’s bustling downtown area, a vibrant hub of bars and restaurants just steps from the university. Police were already en route, responding to reports of a significant physical altercation involving multiple individuals.
Upon arrival, officers were immediately met with the sound of gunfire, sending panicked crowds scattering for safety. The lively pedestrian mall transformed into a scene of chaos as bystanders desperately sought cover.
Five victims were identified, three of whom are students at the University of Iowa. One individual remains in critical condition, battling for their life, while the other four are reported to be in stable condition after receiving treatment for gunshot wounds at local hospitals.
As of Sunday afternoon, no arrests have been made, but the Iowa City Police Department is pursuing several promising leads. Investigators have released images of five individuals considered persons of interest, hoping the public can aid in their identification.
University of Iowa President Barb Wilson addressed the campus community with a message of sorrow and resolve. She emphasized the university’s full support of the police investigation and urged students to rely on official channels for updates during this difficult time.
