UMVA has learned that a brutal assault and robbery in downtown Toronto’s hotel corridor has spiraled into a sweeping police crackdown.
On April 25, a man waiting to check in was grabbed by a gang of five men ahead of him, turning a tense argument into a violent attack that left the victim injured and his belongings stolen.
Over the past weeks, Toronto police have hauled in seven suspects: Nadeem Ali, 32, of Oakville; Mahad Awan, 24, of Brampton; Piraveen Jegathesvaran, 30, of Whitby; Gurman Bhandal, 25, of Caledon; Harneet Dhindsa, 25, of Blue Mountains; and two others arrested earlier this month.
Meanwhile, a harrowing capsize near Cherry Beach saw an inflatable vessel tipping over at 1:45 p.m., leaving a man in his 40s and a dog in peril.
Marine teams rescued the man, who suffered non‑life‑threatening injuries, and later located the dog, but the search for the second boater continues.
In a separate flare of violence, two male youths clashed in Mississauga’s south end, prompting a heavy police presence; both were hospitalized with non‑life‑threatening injuries and no suspects remain missing.
And in a twist of fate, a Toronto carjacker who stole a $1‑million Ferrari was granted house arrest, while a 33‑year‑old man faced a decade in U.S. prison for a sextortion scheme, underscoring the city’s complex crime landscape.
