Father and son accused of altering VINs; male wanted for indecent act, sex assault in Pickering

Father and son accused of altering VINs; male wanted for indecent act, sex assault in Pickering

A quiet investigation began last November, triggered by subtle discrepancies in vehicle registrations. Halton Regional Police noticed inconsistencies between Ministry of Transportation records and the documentation presented for two vehicles, hinting at something far more serious beneath the surface.

The investigation quickly uncovered a sophisticated scheme involving altered Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs). Authorities allege that forged bills of sale and fabricated letters of employment were used to deceptively register the vehicles to an unsuspecting local business, masking the true origin of the cars.

The search led to the recovery of two stolen vehicles: a 2023 Ford F-150, originally taken from Mississauga, and a 2021 Dodge Charger, reported stolen from Windsor. Both vehicles had undergone the deliberate manipulation of their VINs, effectively erasing their history.

Father Amer Kunda and son Sameil Kunda are facing charges in Halton.

Amer Kunda, 55, of Orangeville, now faces a series of charges including possession of stolen property with an obliterated VIN, uttering forged documents, and multiple counts of disobeying a court order and driving while suspended. He was released pending a future court appearance.

His son, Sameil Kunda, 28, of Milton, has also been charged in connection with the case. He faces charges related to uttering forged documents and driving while under suspension, and was similarly released awaiting court proceedings.

Investigators believe this case may represent only a portion of a larger operation. They have released images of both accused individuals, hoping to generate leads and uncover additional offenses linked to the VIN alteration scheme.

Two stolen vehicles, a 2021 Dodge Charger and 2023 Ford F-150, were seized by police in Milton.

Meanwhile, in Pickering, police are urgently seeking a suspect following a disturbing series of incidents at a local shopping center. The incidents escalated from an indecent act to a sexual assault, leaving authorities and the community deeply concerned.

On March 26th, a man entered a clothing store within The Shops at Pickering City Centre and allegedly exposed himself to customers and staff while in a change room. Mall security promptly removed him from the premises, but the situation tragically worsened.

Just days later, on April 2nd, the same suspect returned to the same store and allegedly sexually assaulted a female employee. Thankfully, the victim did not sustain any physical injuries, but the emotional impact is undoubtedly significant.

A male suspect is wanted following an alleged indecent act and sexual assault in Pickering.

The suspect is described as a Brown male, approximately 5-foot-5 to 5-foot-8, with a thin build and black facial hair. He fled the scene before police could arrive, prompting a widespread search and a public appeal for information.

Detectives are asking anyone with information – including cellphone footage, dashcam recordings, or surveillance video – to come forward. Even seemingly minor details could prove crucial in identifying and apprehending this individual.

Anyone with information regarding the vehicle fraud case is urged to contact the 1 District Criminal Investigations Bureau. Those with information about the Pickering incidents are asked to contact the Special Victims Unit or Durham Regional Crime Stoppers, where anonymity is guaranteed.
