Imam Mohammad Ali Elahi, based in Dearborn Heights, Michigan, recently eulogized Ayatollah Khamenei – a leader who openly called for “Death to America” – using strikingly harsh language, yet enjoyed consistent access and support from the Democratic Party.
Before images began disappearing from his social media accounts, a digital trail revealed a surprising number of photographs featuring Elahi alongside high-profile Democrats. Former President Bill Clinton, Vice President Kamala Harris, and Secretary of State John Kerry all appeared in photos with the Imam, raising questions about awareness and judgment within the party.
The connections didn’t stop at the national level. Current Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist, and Senator Gary Peters were also pictured with Elahi, with the Imam even delivering a Muslim prayer tribute at Whitmer’s 2023 inauguration. These weren’t isolated encounters; the Imam’s mosque actively sponsored events featuring figures like Dr. Anthony Fauci, further solidifying his position within Democratic circles.
Financial contributions paint a similar picture. Campaign finance records show Elahi donating to several Democratic candidates in Michigan, including over $800 to current Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed and over $1,000 to Lieutenant Governor Gilchrist. Even Mike Duggan, now an Independent candidate for governor, received a $500 contribution and was photographed sharing a meal with the Imam.
The controversy stems from Elahi’s outspoken support for the Iranian regime and his past affiliations. Reports indicate he once headed the “political ideological office” of the Iranian Navy. His mosque has also been accused of disseminating extremist propaganda aligned with the Iranian government’s agenda, prompting calls for investigation from U.S. lawmakers.
Adding another layer of complexity, Elahi was recently photographed with Iran’s President at the United Nations General Assembly, alongside figures linked to controversial activist groups and even individuals previously investigated by the FBI. His social media consistently features praise for Iranian leaders and criticism of Israel and Western media.
When confronted with these connections, many Democrats offered minimal responses or downplayed their interactions with Elahi. Some claimed brief encounters were merely social niceties, while others simply didn’t respond to inquiries. The silence speaks volumes, especially given the Imam’s history and the regime’s hostile rhetoric towards the United States.
