The construction of a 10-million-liter-per-day (MLD) wastewater treatment facility in the Clark Freeport Zone (CFZ) in Pampanga has begun. This new facility will be developed by Clark Water, the sole provider of water and wastewater services in the CFZ.
The project, which broke ground on July 1, is expected to provide sufficient sewerage capacity for the CFZ's existing and future developments. According to officials, the facility will be built within the Clark Centralized Wastewater Treatment Facility and will use sequencing batch reactor (SBR) technology with biological nutrient removal (BNR) to improve wastewater treatment efficiency and meet environmental standards.
The facility will play a crucial role in addressing the current demand for sewer services in the CFZ, while also ensuring that future developments have appropriate sanitation services. Manila Water's Chief Operating Officer for the Non-East Zone noted that the project is a step towards providing a sustainable and healthy environment for residents and businesses in the area.
The 4,400-hectare (ha) Clark Freeport Zone is a former US military base that has been transformed into an economic and tourism hub. It is home to various developments, including the Clark International Airport Complex, Clark Entertainment and Events Center, and the Clark National Food Terminal.
The project highlights the importance of wastewater management in supporting public health and protecting environmental resources. Officials emphasized the need for a coordinated approach to ensure that the treatment system aligns with the freeport's operational requirements.
