A quiet evening in Ajax shattered on Thursday when police responded to a disturbing call – a woman found with life-threatening injuries. Paramedics initially requested assistance, unaware they were stepping into a scene of alleged violence within a local home.
The victim, a woman whose identity is being protected, was rushed to a trauma centre in critical condition. Investigators quickly focused on another resident of the home, an 87-year-old woman now facing charges of aggravated assault. The arrest unfolded without incident, but the details paint a grim picture of a dispute turned tragically violent.
The victim’s condition has since been upgraded to serious but stable, offering a small measure of relief amidst the unsettling circumstances. The accused remains in custody, awaiting a bail hearing as the investigation continues to unravel the events leading to the assault.
Elsewhere in the region, a months-long investigation culminated in the arrest of a 61-year-old Brampton man, Joseph Hunter. Halton Regional Police’s Internet Child Exploitation Unit uncovered a disturbing trove of evidence, leading to charges including possession and creation of child sexual abuse material, and the horrifying crime of luring a child under the age of sixteen.
This case is particularly concerning to investigators, who believe there may be additional victims. A parallel investigation by Hamilton Police contributed to the charges against Hunter, highlighting the collaborative effort to combat online exploitation. He is currently held in custody pending a bail hearing.
In a separate incident, also in Ajax, a suspicious vehicle led police to a man and woman facing a multitude of charges. Officers responded to reports of a vehicle driving without lights, discovering it was stolen and contained a shotgun and an imitation firearm. A man found on the property allegedly possessed break-and-enter tools, drugs, and shotgun shells.
Daniel Alexander Cabarios, 40, of Toronto, already under a weapons prohibition, faces a long list of charges. Corrine Elizabeth Butler, 45, also of Toronto, is accused of occupying the vehicle with a firearm and related offences. Both remain in custody awaiting a bail hearing.
Finally, Durham Regional Police have made an arrest in connection with an armed robbery that occurred in Pickering earlier this year. A 14-year-old boy was apprehended at a high school in Barrie, charged with robbery with a firearm and possession of stolen property. The incident involved a planned shoe transaction that turned into a terrifying confrontation.
The victim, a young man, was confronted by three masked individuals, one of whom brandished a weapon and demanded cash. While thankfully unharmed, the experience was undoubtedly traumatic. Two suspects remain at large as the investigation continues, seeking to bring all those responsible to justice.
