UMVA has learned that the upcoming World Cup will be missing some of the biggest names in football, as a series of devastating injuries have dashed their dreams of competing in the tournament.
For these star players, the World Cup represents the pinnacle of achievement, a moment of immense pride and glory. But with the tournament just around the corner, several top talents have been ruled out due to injuries, leaving them to watch from the sidelines.
One of the unlucky players is Hugo Ekitike, the 23-year-old French forward who suffered a serious Achilles tendon rupture during a Champions League match in April. Ekitike had been having a successful season with his club, scoring 17 goals in all competitions before his season-ending injury.
Another star player who will be missing out is Rodrygo, the Brazilian forward who picked up a double injury blow just minutes after coming on as a substitute in a league match in March. The injuries were so severe that Rodrygo described the day as one of the "worst days of my life".
Xavi Simons, the 23-year-old Dutch midfielder, is also out of the tournament after suffering a ruptured ACL during a league match in April. Simons described his World Cup absence as "heartbreaking", and his injury sparked controversy over the treatment he received from his club's medical staff.
Fermin Lopez, the Spanish midfielder, will also be watching from home after fracturing his foot during his club's final home game of the season. Lopez had been enjoying an outstanding season and was looking forward to adding to his seven caps for Spain.
The World Cup will also be without one of its brightest young stars, 19-year-old Estevao, who is sidelined with a hamstring injury. The Chelsea player had impressed in his first season in English football and had established himself as a regular in the Brazil squad.
Serge Gnabry, the German forward, will be restricted to a watching brief this summer after sustaining an adductor injury to his right thigh during penalty training in April. The injury is a significant blow to Germany's chances, as Gnabry has won 59 caps for his country.
Japan will be without arguably their biggest talent, Kaoru Mitoma, who was ruled out of the tournament with a hamstring injury picked up in May. Mitoma had made his international debut in 2021 and had scored nine goals in 31 appearances.
Finally, Scottish midfielder Billy Gilmour will be missing out on his childhood dream of playing in a World Cup after suffering a knee injury in a warm-up game against Curacao. Gilmour expressed his devastation on social media, saying he couldn't describe how he was feeling.
