Riley Gaines and MyKayla Skinner Celebrate Supreme Court Decision Safeguarding Women in Sports, Reach Out to Simone Biles

Riley Gaines and MyKayla Skinner Celebrate Supreme Court Decision Safeguarding Women in Sports, Reach Out to Simone Biles

On Tuesday, the US Supreme Court voted to allow states to ban transgender biological males from girls’ sports, a decision seen as a significant victory for women’s athletics.

The 6‑3 ruling upheld West Virginia and Idaho laws that prohibit biological males from competing on girls’ teams, finding no violation of the Constitution’s equal protection clause or Title IX.

The decision followed challenges by two athletes who sought to compete against female teammates; their legal representation was not named.

The majority opinion highlighted that Title IX was intended to promote equal opportunity for female student‑athletes, but acknowledged inherent physical differences that affect athletic performance.

Earlier this year, a high‑school girls’ softball team won a state championship after a male player disguised as a girl joined the roster, prompting controversy.

The incident drew criticism from several athletes, including Simone Biles, who publicly questioned the team’s legitimacy and the fairness of the competition.

In response, the athletes who had challenged the bans expressed support for the Supreme Court ruling and called for solidarity among female competitors.

One athlete said the ruling made her feel “absolutely vindicated” and urged elite female athletes to unite in advocacy.

She added, “Let this be a clarion call, not just to Simone, but to every elite female athlete to link arms.”

Another former Olympian expressed hope that the ruling will open doors for her daughter and future athletes.

She said, “I want my daughter to have every opportunity that I had, and this decision gives us a chance to fight for those rights.”

The ruling is expected to influence future policies on gender and sports participation across the country.

It also highlights ongoing debates about the balance between inclusion and competitive fairness in high‑school athletics.
