The hunt ended on the idyllic shores of Bali. A notorious Scottish crime boss, Steven Lyons, was apprehended over the weekend, finally cornered after months evading international authorities.
Lyons, 45, isn’t just a local troublemaker; he’s described as a key figure in a sprawling international crime syndicate. His capture came swiftly after arriving at Bali’s airport, flagged by an Interpol Red Notice issued by Spain.
The Red Notice, essentially a global wanted alert, signaled Lyons’ status as a high-priority target. He faces serious charges in both Spain and the United Kingdom, accusations that paint a picture of a sophisticated criminal operation.
Authorities plan to swiftly transport Lyons to Spain via Doha. He’s been handed over to Spanish Civil Guard officers, readying for a trial in Madrid centered around organized crime, drug trafficking, and complex money laundering schemes.
The arrest stems from a murder in Spain in 2024, placing Lyons on Spain’s wanted list for roughly two years. This wasn’t a solo operation; the takedown was the result of a coordinated investigation involving Spanish, Scottish, and Indonesian police.
Intelligence suggests Lyons orchestrated a transnational criminal network originating in Cumbernauld, Scotland. From there, he allegedly controlled the flow of narcotics from Spain into the United Kingdom, a network built on illicit profits.
The operation didn’t stop with Lyons’ arrest. Investigators believe his organization laundered money through a web of shell companies scattered across Europe and the Middle East – Spain, Scotland, England, Dubai, Qatar, Bahrain, and Turkey all played a role.
Just a day before Lyons’ capture, simultaneous raids unfolded in Scotland and Spain, supported by Europol. These raids led to multiple arrests, with further detentions occurring in Turkey, the Netherlands, and the United Arab Emirates, signaling a significant disruption to the network.
Lyons’ past is steeped in violence. He survived a 2006 shooting in Glasgow that tragically claimed the life of his cousin. He subsequently relocated to Spain and later established a base in Dubai.
The shadow of gangland violence followed him. Last May, his brother and an associate were fatally shot at a beachfront bar in Fuengirola, Spain – a grim reminder of the dangerous world he inhabited.
