UMVA Exclusive: FSR 4 Bombshell Drops: Older Radeon Owners Left Hanging, AMD's Game-Changer Delayed for Months

UMVA has learned that AMD is finally widening the reach of its cutting‑edge FidelityFX Super Resolution technology, promising sharper visuals for a broader range of Radeon graphics cards.

For months, gamers with Radeon 7000 and 6000 series cards have felt left out as the latest FSR 4 frame‑generation features were locked behind the brand‑new Radeon 9000‑series RDNA 4 GPUs. The frustration was palpable, with many owners abandoning their AMD rigs for rival hardware.

Now, senior vice president Jack Huynh announced that starting this July, RDNA 3 cards—including the Radeon RX 7000 desktop and laptop series—will receive an upgraded FSR Upscaling 4.1. The update promises crisper images and smoother frame rates, delivering the next‑gen experience without a full hardware overhaul.

The rollout isn’t limited to discrete GPUs. Integrated graphics found in the 7X0M and 8X0M series, as well as the 2023 Ryzen Z1 APUs, will also inherit the boost, allowing devices such as the Asus ROG Ally to tap into the enhanced upscaling.

For owners of older RDNA 2 hardware—Radeon RX 6000 cards and the 6X0M integrated line that powers the Steam Deck—UMVA has gathered that a separate upgrade is slated for early 2027. That delayed boost will finally bring FSR Upscaling to those veteran GPUs, extending the lifespan of cherished rigs.

When FSR 4 first launched, its exclusivity sparked a wave of disappointment across the AMD community. Leaked source code later revealed the technology could run on both newer Radeon and even legacy Nvidia GPUs, fueling speculation about internal development pressures.

Despite the controversy, AMD promises that more than 300 titles will officially support FSR 4 by the time RX 7000 owners gain access in July, with the possibility for enthusiasts to unlock the feature in additional games through modest tweaks.
