Prep school teacher filmed sex with student she was tutoring: ‘Not my best thinking’

Prep school teacher filmed sex with student she was tutoring: ‘Not my best thinking’

A former Michigan teacher faced the consequences of a devastating betrayal this week, sentenced to a lengthy prison term for a crime that shattered a family and violated the trust placed in her. Jocelyn Sanroman, 27, received a sentence of four to fifteen years after admitting to a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old student she was tutoring.

The abuse unfolded in 2023, while Sanroman was employed at Oakside Prep Academy, a charter school near Detroit. Court records reveal she not only engaged in sexual activity with the student but also secretly recorded the encounters within the teen’s own home – a chilling detail that deeply impacted the judge’s sentencing decision.

The disturbing relationship came to light when Sanroman confided in a colleague, who immediately contacted authorities. This swift action by a fellow educator proved crucial in halting the abuse and initiating a thorough investigation.

During the sentencing hearing, the judge expressed profound disgust at Sanroman’s actions, labeling the behavior as “serious risk taking” and a blatant exploitation of a vulnerable minor. The judge directly confronted Sanroman, questioning her thought process at the time, to which she simply replied, “Not my best thinking.”

The emotional toll on the victim and his family was powerfully conveyed through a victim impact statement read by the boy’s mother. She described a complete upheaval of their lives, witnessing her son’s transformation into a withdrawn and fearful individual, forced to abandon his normal life and seek education online.

“I watched my son’s name be publicly judged and criticized,” the mother wrote, her words echoing the profound pain and shame inflicted upon her family. “His normal life, his education, his routine and his sense of security was taken.” She also expressed a constant fear for her son’s future and the safety of other children.

Sanroman’s defense attorney cited unaddressed mental health issues as a contributing factor to her actions, stating she recognizes the severity of her error in judgment and is committed to personal growth. However, this explanation offered little solace to the court or the victim’s family.

As part of the plea agreement, Sanroman will be required to register as a sex offender for life, a permanent mark of her crime. The Oakland County Prosecutor emphasized the gravity of the situation, highlighting the abuse of power inherent in a teacher-student relationship.

While a 16-year-old may legally consent to sexual activity, the prosecutor underscored that this consent is irrelevant when the other party is an authority figure entrusted with the student’s well-being. The priority, she stated, must always be to ensure schools are safe havens for children – free from all forms of abuse and exploitation.

School officials at Oakside Prep Academy acted swiftly upon learning of the allegations, reaffirming their commitment to student safety. The school, part of a larger network promoting character education, now faces the stark reality that its “Moral Focus” lessons were tragically undermined by the actions of one of its own.
