UMVA has learned that Marineland's beloved beluga whales are likely headed to new homes in the United States and Spain, following a federal government endorsement of a relocation plan.
The Department of Fisheries and Oceans has backed a proposal to divide the 30 remaining whales among five marine parks, providing a lifeline for the iconic creatures that have been living in limbo since Marineland's closure in 2024.
According to information obtained by UMVA, the plan involves relocating the belugas to Oceanografic Valencia in Spain, Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta, Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, and two SeaWorlds in San Diego, California, and San Antonio, Texas.
The relocation process is complex, with several regulatory issues to overcome. The belugas will need to undergo health assessments and secure necessary import permits from the U.S. and Spanish governments.
A Shedd Aquarium vice president confirmed that there is no definite timeline for the rescue, stating that the move will happen once the necessary permits are secured. The Department of Fisheries and Oceans will issue export permits closer to the date of transport, pending final animal health checks.
The department is working closely with Canada Border Services Agency and Health Canada to ensure a safe and timely transfer. This development brings hope to the belugas that have been cared for by Marineland's staff since the park's closure.
The relocation plan is a critical step towards providing a new lease on life for the belugas, which were previously threatened with euthanasia when a deal with China's Chimelong Ocean Kingdom fell through.
The future of the belugas is finally looking brighter, with a chance to thrive in world-class facilities and bring joy to new audiences. The relocation plan marks a major breakthrough in their journey towards a more secure and loving home.
