Professional Footballer Hector Bellerin Highlights Need for Greater LGBTQ+ Inclusion and Safety in Football.

Hector Bellerin, the current Real Betis right-back, has expressed concerns that homophobia is driving players away from the game. The 31-year-old has consistently spoken out on social issues and equal rights, and continues to advocate for change in football. Bellerin has been particularly vocal about the lack of openly homosexual players in the men's game. He recently discussed this topic on a Catalan talk show, where he shared his thoughts on the matter.

During the talk show, Bellerin explained that he has not met any openly homosexual players, and that many players who do not identify as heterosexual are leaving the game due to a lack of safe spaces. He cited a conversation with an anthropologist, who told him that players who do not consider themselves heterosexual are often forced to leave the game as they progress through the age groups. This, Bellerin believes, is a significant issue that needs to be addressed in order to create a more inclusive environment for all players.

Bellerin also spoke about the broader social issues that are reflected in the game of football. He pointed to a recent friendly match between Spain and Egypt, where anti-Muslim chants were heard from the crowd, despite the fact that Spain's star player is himself a Muslim. Bellerin believes that the tense atmosphere and sense of impunity that exists in society is often reflected in the behavior of fans inside stadiums. He argued that football has always been a reflection of society, and that the game cannot be separated from the social issues that exist outside of it.

Bellerin also criticized the football community's response to the genocide in Palestine, comparing it to the response to the invasion of Ukraine by Russia. He noted that while many teams and organizations took a strong stance against the war in Ukraine, there was relatively little response to the situation in Palestine. Bellerin praised Athletic Club for hosting a match between the Basque national team and the Palestine national team, with all proceeds going towards aid for those affected in Gaza. He believes that more needs to be done to raise awareness and take action on this issue.
