Tensions flared in Brooklyn’s Bushwick neighborhood this weekend, erupting into protests after federal immigration authorities detained a man accused of both assault and drug possession. The situation quickly escalated, leading to nearly ten arrests as demonstrators clashed with law enforcement outside a local hospital.
The focus of the controversy is Chidozie Wilson Okeke, a Nigerian national who initially entered the United States on a tourist visa in 2023. He was required to depart the country by February 26, 2024, but remained, becoming the subject of an immigration enforcement operation on Saturday.
Authorities allege that Okeke actively resisted arrest, refusing to exit his vehicle when approached by ICE agents. The situation turned dangerous when he allegedly attempted to strike the agents with his car, followed by a physical altercation involving punches and elbows.
Following his apprehension, Okeke was transported to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center for a medical evaluation. However, reports indicate his resistance continued within the hospital, with accounts describing him throwing himself to the floor and shouting during the assessment.
As news of the arrest spread, a crowd of anti-ICE protesters converged outside the hospital. The demonstration took a volatile turn, with reports of damage to ICE vehicles and assaults on agents, resulting in minor injuries.
New York City police responded to the scene around 10:25 p.m., finding protesters obstructing traffic and blocking emergency access to the hospital. Repeated warnings to disperse were issued, but ultimately ignored.
Eight individuals were arrested and charged with offenses including resisting arrest, obstructing governmental administration, reckless endangerment, and criminal mischief. One additional person received a summons and was released. Police emphasized their non-participation in civil immigration enforcement and stated they were unaware of the ICE operation beforehand.
Local officials have voiced strong criticism of the ICE operation. One city representative described the raids as “cruel and inhumane,” arguing they do not contribute to public safety and expressing these concerns directly to the President.
Video footage circulating online depicts ICE agents physically removing Okeke from the hospital, further fueling the outrage and sparking a wider debate about immigration enforcement tactics and their impact on communities.
