Democratic Representative Marie Gluesenkamp Perez is pressing Congress to confront the impact of cognitive decline among its members, a move that has resonated with lawmakers across the political spectrum who are uneasy about an increasingly aging legislative body.
In a video posted to social media, the congresswoman emphasized a basic workplace principle: “In every job I’ve ever had, there’s a simple expectation—you must be able to do the work. Either you can do it or you can’t. Congress shouldn’t be any different.”
In May, she introduced an amendment to the FY 27 Legislative Branch Appropriations bill that would require the Office of Congressional Conduct to create a standard defining conduct that reflects a member’s ability to fulfill duties without significant, irreversible cognitive impairment. The amendment was defeated in a voice vote.
Gluesenkamp Perez insists the effort to curb what she calls a “gerontocracy” is far from finished, and reactions on social media suggest she may have allies on the opposite side of the aisle.
A Republican candidate for Connecticut’s 4th district publicly agreed with her stance, while an anonymous right‑wing account praised the idea of mandatory cognitive testing for politicians, calling the proposal “extremely based” and noting it should have been considered earlier.
Some conservative commentators, however, argue the measure does not go far enough, contending that broader fiscal challenges such as entitlement spending deserve greater attention than cognitive assessments alone.
Gluesenkamp Perez has long warned that lawmakers who remain in office despite declining mental capacity erode public confidence. She previously cited the health concerns surrounding a senior senator whose cognitive decline became a focal point before his death in 2023.
The debate has attracted criticism from both parties, with detractors accusing progressive groups of pushing younger, corporate‑aligned candidates, while others claim the focus on age detracts from pressing budgetary issues.
In 2024, the representative called for President Joe Biden to withdraw from the presidential race, citing concerns about his health and age following a widely criticized debate performance, underscoring her willingness to address age‑related fitness for office at the highest levels.
She clarified that her position is not opposed to elderly service per se, but to situations where significant cognitive impairment hampers a member’s ability to serve effectively, stating that a healthier, more capable Congress would strengthen the institution.
