The House of Representatives approved a short‑term continuing resolution that funds the federal government through December 4, averting an imminent lapse of authority that would have occurred at midnight on September 30.
The measure passed with a 220‑205 vote. Only one Republican, Thomas Massie, voted against the bill, while six Democrats joined the majority in supporting it.
The House will recess from July 24 until August 31, and the resolution is designed to keep government operations running through the November elections.
In a statement, the Speaker condemned the opposition, asserting that the Democratic bloc’s actions threaten federal workers and the public by risking a shutdown.
Democratic leaders issued a counterstatement, arguing that the resolution expands executive control over the budget, does not address concerns about immigration enforcement funding, and represents a premature effort to avoid bipartisan negotiations.
The Senate Majority Leader announced plans to place a stopgap funding bill before the Senate floor before the chamber’s August recess, aiming to secure funding through the election period.
The Senate Appropriations Chair is engaged in discussions with Senate Democrats to develop a bipartisan funding package that would extend beyond the November election.
Republican senators are also negotiating with the White House on additional spending provisions not included in the House version, suggesting the Senate measure may incorporate those requests.
