A quiet riverside walk turned extraordinary for Claudie Paddick when her labrador, Growler, erupted in a frenzy of barking. What unfolded was a sight few in Hampshire, England, could ever expect – a capybara, basking in the afternoon sun.
Samba, a recent arrival from Jimmy’s Farm and Wildlife Park, had made a daring escape. She’d journeyed with a companion, Tango, but somehow slipped away, initiating a six-day search that captivated the local community.
Paddick, accompanied by her sausage dog Patsy, watched in disbelief as the unusual rodent, seemingly startled, plunged into the River Itchen. The animal swiftly swam away, leaving a ripple of astonishment in its wake.
“It then jumped in the river and it didn’t come back out, and I was like, what the hell is that?” Paddick recounted, still processing the unexpected encounter. A creature from the Amazon rainforest, so far from its natural habitat, was a truly surreal experience.
News of the sighting spread rapidly, drawing around fifteen people to the riverbank. Equipped with heat-seeking technology, they hoped to locate Samba and bring her safely back. The search highlighted the capybara’s remarkable ability to adapt and evade detection.
Before her escape, Samba had been settling into her new surroundings. The zoo had urged residents to meticulously check their gardens, ponds, and waterways, anticipating she might seek refuge in these secluded spots.
Paddick, a family lawyer, admitted she was a complete novice when it came to capybaras. “A capybara is something I have never seen or even heard of before, but now I’m a bit of an expert,” she laughed, a testament to the unforgettable nature of the encounter.
