Traffic on the M25 was brought to a standstill after a serious crash in Surrey, with motorists forced to step out of their cars onto the scorching road.
The emergency services strongly advise against exiting vehicles on the road, especially during the heatwave, with temperatures approaching 30C in the area.
Despite the risks, some drivers took their dogs out for a walk on the carriageway, while others parked on the lined verges, usually reserved for emergency vehicles.
An air ambulance was deployed to the scene, and motorists were seen stepping out of their vehicles to watch it take off.
One motorist who was caught in the M25 closure said he missed his first flight in 50 years due to the "horrific" crash.
He advised others to "stay well clear of the M25" and warned that "some poor soul might not be going home today."
National Highways reported that the motorway is blocked in both directions, with traffic stationary on the UK's busiest motorway.
The road surface is likely to be several degrees hotter than the air temperature, posing a significant risk to motorists who exit their vehicles.
Surrey Police advised motorists to expect lengthy delays in the area and to avoid the area if possible, using alternative routes and allowing extra time for their journey.
National Highways warned of delays in excess of 60 minutes and 6 miles of congestion on the approach to the crash scene.
The air ambulance is currently working at the scene, and traffic is being held on the M25 clockwise at J6 Godstone due to a serious collision.
