A routine investigation in Hamilton took a startling turn early Thursday morning when an 18-year-old man, already in custody for previous shoplifting offenses, managed a daring escape while still handcuffed.
Sultan Aldarwish was initially apprehended on Main St. East and Grant Ave. for an outstanding warrant related to failing to comply with a release order stemming from earlier theft incidents. He then faced additional charges for further violations of his release conditions.
The circumstances surrounding his escape remain unclear, with police offering no immediate explanation as to how Aldarwish was able to break free despite being restrained. A massive search was immediately launched, mobilizing officers and a K9 unit across the city.
The last confirmed sighting placed Aldarwish in the vicinity of Barton St. East and Leeming St. He is described as a Middle Eastern male, standing 6-foot-1, weighing approximately 170 pounds, with distinctive long, curly black hair, brown eyes, a small goatee, and a thin moustache.
At the time of his escape, Aldarwish was wearing a black Moose Knuckle jacket, black shorts, and black shoes – a description authorities hope will aid in his swift recapture. The search continues with urgency.
Meanwhile, in Toronto, a separate investigation concluded with an arrest following a disturbing alleged sex assault downtown. The incident occurred near Church St. and The Esplanade early Sunday morning.
According to police reports, a man approached a victim from behind, forcibly moved them to a secluded area, and committed a sexual assault. Quick-thinking passersby intervened, prompting the suspect to flee the scene.
Following the release of suspect images to the public, Toronto Police identified Jemal Detamo, 23, as the individual responsible. He was arrested Wednesday and now faces charges of criminal harassment, sexual assault, and breach of probation.
