A deeply concerning health battle has emerged for renowned Canadian psychologist Jordan Peterson. His daughter, Mikhaila Peterson, recently revealed he is grappling with a serious neurological condition causing a debilitating movement disorder known as akathisia.
Akathisia manifests as an inability to remain physically still, a distressing symptom often linked to certain medications, particularly antipsychotics. What makes this case particularly complex is that Peterson has been off psychiatric medications for six years, yet the symptoms surfaced last summer.
The current crisis appears to be rooted in a previous neurological injury, exacerbated by a cascade of challenging events. A significant flare-up, likely triggered by mold exposure and intense stress, quickly spiraled into pneumonia and a life-threatening bout of sepsis.
This isn’t the first time Peterson has faced significant health hurdles. He previously confronted an addiction to benzodiazepines, leading to a period of rehabilitation in Moscow back in 2019. This recent episode, however, has proven particularly harrowing for the entire family.
Mikhaila Peterson described the past year as “terrible,” detailing a frustrating journey of repeated misdiagnoses before the true nature of her father’s condition was finally identified. The stress of losing both parents last year, coupled with a relocation and the sale of his home, appear to have contributed to the resurgence of neurological symptoms.
The family had experienced similar symptoms in 2020 and 2021, but believed those were resolved after a prolonged period off medication. The current recurrence, therefore, came as a shocking and deeply unsettling development.
Mikhaila, who is currently 25 weeks pregnant, shared the emotional toll the situation has taken, admitting to daily tears until recently. The uncertainty and distress have been immense, casting a long shadow over the family’s well-being.
Despite the gravity of the situation, a glimmer of hope has emerged with the accurate diagnosis. Mikhaila expressed optimism that, as in the past, the condition can be carefully addressed and healed. She has indicated she will refrain from further updates until significant improvement is observed.
Previously, Mikhaila had disclosed her father’s diagnosis of chronic inflammatory response syndrome (CIRS), but initially believed it to be separate from the akathisia. The unfolding situation highlights the intricate and often interconnected nature of complex health challenges.
