PARADISE UNDER SIEGE: Tourists BEHAVING BADLY Face HUGE Fines!

PARADISE UNDER SIEGE: Tourists BEHAVING BADLY Face HUGE Fines!

The shimmering island of Capri, a jewel in the Bay of Naples, is reclaiming its serenity. Faced with overwhelming crowds and increasingly aggressive tourism practices, authorities are enacting bold changes designed to restore a sense of peaceful enjoyment for both visitors and residents.

For years, the allure of Capri – its breathtaking views, upscale boutiques, and vibrant culture – has drawn a surge of tourists. On peak days, as many as 50,000 people descend upon the island, straining its infrastructure and diminishing the experience for everyone.

Now, a new ordinance directly addresses the persistent harassment many visitors experience. Aggressive sales tactics, from relentless restaurant touts to intrusive tour operators, are being outlawed, with fines ranging from $30 to $585 for those who violate the rule.

This isn’t simply about curbing annoyance; it’s about preserving the essence of Capri. The island has a long history of protecting its unique character, with rules dating back to the 1960s prohibiting disruptive behavior like loud music and public camping.

Beyond tackling aggressive solicitation, officials are implementing limits on organized tour groups, capping them at 40 people. The days of large groups clogging narrow streets, guided by oversized flags and umbrellas, are coming to an end.

The changes were unanimously approved by the Capri city council, signaling a unified commitment to managing the influx of visitors. Local business leaders are largely supportive, recognizing the need for a more sustainable approach to tourism.

Luciano Bersani, head of Capri’s local business association, described the new rules as a crucial “first step,” emphasizing the need for further initiatives to optimize the island’s flow during peak hours. The goal is to create a more balanced and enjoyable experience for all.

Lorenzo Coppola, president of Capri’s hotel association, hailed the measures as “an act of responsibility,” envisioning an island that is “more livable.” He believes limiting group sizes will significantly alleviate congestion in critical areas, freeing up pedestrian routes.

Even Gianluigi Lembo, owner of the iconic Taverna Anema e Core, welcomes the cap, stating it benefits not just VIP tourists, but everyone seeking to experience the magic of Capri. The island is preparing for another busy summer, but this time, with a renewed focus on quality over quantity.

Mayor Paolo Falco has assured the public that solutions are underway to address port congestion and ensure a smooth summer season. Capri is determined to safeguard its beauty and charm, ensuring it remains a captivating destination for generations to come.
