World number one Aryna Sabalenka is on a quest for her first Wimbledon title, but she's also hoping to persuade the All England Club to reconsider one of its long-standing rules. Sabalenka has been dominating the women's game, winning four Grand Slams since 2023, including two Australian Open and US Open titles. However, she has yet to claim victory at Wimbledon or Roland Garros.
Sabalenka has made a strong start to her Wimbledon campaign, winning her first two games without dropping a set. After her second-round victory over McCartney Kessler, she expressed her happiness with her performance. However, she also took the opportunity to publicly request that Wimbledon relax its no-animals policy and allow players to bring pets into the venue.
Wimbledon's Conditions of Entry guidelines currently prohibit attendees from bringing any animals into the premises, with the exception of Certified Assistance Dogs. This policy is common in sporting events, but some tournaments, like the French Open, have taken a more relaxed approach, even providing a 'Dog Concierge' to handle animals on site.
Sabalenka questioned Wimbledon’s firm stance, stating she doesn’t agree with it. She understands the concerns about potential damage, but argues that well-trained dogs would not cause any issues. Sabalenka shared that she has to leave her dog at home, which can be distressing for both her and the animal.
For Sabalenka, spending time with her dog is a source of comfort and meditation. She expressed her desire for Wimbledon to allow dogs inside, jokingly begging the organizers to reconsider. Having secured a dominant win over Kessler, Sabalenka now prepares for a third-round clash with Jeļena Ostapenko.
