For the first time in its history, the State Department has formally outlined expectations for employee attire, establishing a department-wide standard for how America’s diplomats present themselves on the world stage.
The change, recently implemented within the Foreign Affairs Manual – the agency’s central policy document – signals a significant shift in approach, moving towards a more defined and uniform standard for diplomatic personnel.
Officials cite a need to project “credibility, respect, and the dignity of the nation” through appearance, acknowledging concerns that dress had become “pretty informal” in recent years.
The new policy dictates “Business Formal” attire for meetings and official engagements with foreign counterparts, emphasizing a “polished and professional” appearance unless otherwise specified.
This isn’t simply about suits and ties; it represents a broader recalibration within the State Department, a move towards clearer standards regarding discipline and adherence to established policy.
The shift marks a departure from previous personnel policies that prioritized flexibility and cultural inclusivity, opting instead for a more prescriptive approach to how U.S. diplomats are perceived internationally.
Beyond attire, the department has also revised its workforce evaluation criteria, replacing benchmarks related to diversity, equity, and inclusion with a new focus on “fidelity” – unwavering adherence to U.S. government policy and the chain of command.
Internal documents reveal expectations for mid- and senior-level diplomats to demonstrate loyalty by “zealously executing U.S. government policy,” prioritizing leadership direction in ambiguous situations.
These changes are part of a larger restructuring effort, including plans to reduce staffing and consolidate offices, all pointing towards a more standardized and disciplined approach to diplomatic service.
The formalization of a dress code is the latest step in this ongoing transformation, signaling a renewed emphasis on projecting a consistent and authoritative image of the United States abroad.
