The Philippines is bracing for a surge in data center demand, fueled by the relentless rise of artificial intelligence and a growing need for robust data storage. STT GDC Philippines, a key player in the nation’s digital infrastructure, is actively scouting locations for expansion, recognizing the critical role these facilities play in the evolving technological landscape.
Company President and Chief Executive Officer Carlomagno E. Malana revealed the ongoing search for strategic sites, building upon their existing presence in Davao and Mindanao. The focus isn’t simply on adding capacity, but on anticipating where future demand will concentrate, particularly as AI applications become more widespread.
Currently, the Visayas region is under close consideration, with metropolitan areas offering promising potential. This expansion isn’t a distant plan; STT GDC is already moving forward with a 4-megawatt boost to its Fairview data center, scheduled for completion by the end of the year.
This initial expansion will elevate Fairview’s total capacity to 32 megawatts, a significant step towards meeting the escalating needs of businesses. However, this is just the beginning – Fairview is engineered for substantial growth, capable of scaling to an impressive 124 megawatts in phases.
The broader picture reveals an even more dramatic transformation. The Department of Information and Communications Technology projects the Philippines’ total data center capacity could leap to 1.5 gigawatts by 2028, a massive increase from the current capacity of less than 200 megawatts.
This anticipated growth isn’t solely domestic. Global and regional demands for power and data storage are converging on the Philippines, creating a compelling opportunity. The increasing adoption of AI across industries is the primary catalyst, driving the need for more powerful and reliable data infrastructure.
STT GDC Philippines, a collaborative venture between Globe Telecom, Ayala Corp., and ST Telemedia Global Data Centres, currently operates seven data centers nationwide, collectively delivering nearly 150 megawatts of information technology load. Their strategic expansions are poised to capitalize on this burgeoning market.
The phased development approach at Fairview underscores a commitment to responsiveness. By aligning capacity increases with actual customer demand, STT GDC aims to provide a flexible and scalable solution for businesses navigating the complexities of the digital age.
