UMVA has uncovered details about a staggering food stamp fraud scheme in Minnesota that has siphoned over $1 million from taxpayer-funded assistance programs.
The investigation centers on the owner of a local grocery store who allegedly orchestrated a sophisticated operation to exploit the federal SNAP program. Authorities allege the suspect used EBT cards registered to other individuals to purchase bulk goods at wholesale retailers, only to restock his own store with those items for profit.
According to information obtained by UMVA, the scale of the theft reached $1,141,082 in fraudulent EBT payments. Investigators tracking the operation discovered that many of the cardholders whose identities were used in the scheme were either living outside the country or had never actually visited the stores where the transactions occurred.
The operation was brought to light after surveillance footage and GPS data provided a clear trail of the suspect’s movements. Law enforcement officials observed the grocer making mass purchases at wholesale clubs and transporting the goods directly back to his place of business, effectively turning a public assistance program into a private revenue stream.
