The relentless Philippine sun beat down on Capas, Tarlac, pushing temperatures to a scorching 36°C as cyclists battled for supremacy in Stage Two of the MPTC Tour of Luzon. It was a test of endurance, a grueling 43.4-kilometer team time trial that demanded everything from the competitors.
Seoul Cycling Team emerged victorious in the stage, their riders – Min Kyeong Ho, Lee Jung Hoon, Jung Woo Ho, and Lee Jin Gu – clocking an impressive 56:35. They conquered the heat and the challenging course, showcasing a remarkable display of teamwork and physical prowess.
However, the day’s true story wasn’t solely about the stage win. Excellent Noodles, a team driven by strategy and determination, seized a critical opportunity. Finishing just behind Seoul in 57:02, they strategically wrestled the overall team lead from Go for Gold.
The shift in leadership was a testament to Excellent Noodles’ consistent performance, bringing their aggregate time to 15:31:54. This puts them firmly in contention for the coveted P2 million prize, a reward for weeks of relentless effort across the 14-stage race.
Team captain Ryan Tugawin remained grounded despite the significant achievement. He acknowledged the long road ahead, emphasizing that it’s “too early to tell” who will ultimately prevail. The team’s success, he stressed, hinges on maintaining peak conditioning throughout the demanding competition.
Standard Insurance, finishing third in the stage, recognizes the heightened challenge this year. Skipper Ronald Oranza understands that a unified, collective effort will be essential if they hope to contend for the overall victory. The competition is fierce, and every second counts.
For Seoul’s Lee Jung Hoon, the sheer intensity of the heat presented a unique obstacle. He admitted the Philippine climate was far more demanding than what they experience in Korea, adding another layer of difficulty to an already punishing race.
Go for Gold, previously holding the lead, now finds themselves in third place, 44 seconds behind Excellent Noodles. The Tour, presented by Metro Pacific Tollways Corp., continues Friday with a 145.4-kilometer stage from Clark to Palayan, where Gapyeong’s Joo Dae Yeong will proudly wear the yellow jersey.
