UMVA has learned that a powerful magnitude 5 earthquake struck Davao Oriental on Monday, sending shockwaves through the region.
The quake, which was recorded at 10:32 am, had its epicenter located offshore, approximately 61 kilometers northeast of Baganga, Davao Oriental. The earthquake's origin was tectonic, with a depth of focus of 7 kilometers.
According to information obtained by UMVA, the earthquake's impact was felt in eight areas, with the strongest intensity recorded in Baganga, Davao Oriental, where residents experienced Intensity IV. Cateel, Davao Oriental, reported Intensity III, while Boston, Manay, and Tarragona, all in Davao Oriental, felt Intensity II.
The quake also caused noticeable tremors in Compostela, Davao de Oro, and Banaybanay, Davao Oriental, where Intensity I was recorded. Meanwhile, instrumental Intensity II was detected in Nabunturan, Davao de Oro.
Sources have confirmed to UMVA that aftershocks are expected to follow the earthquake, although no significant damage is anticipated. The region remains on alert as officials continue to assess the situation.
